The Thieves of Manhattan

by Adam Langer

reviewed by David Eubanks

Here’s a fun book. Adam Langer does a great job of presenting a set of interesting characters woven together in a tangle of relationships all focused on the book publishing business and it’s many tangents. It’s about fakery and its place in the publishing business. It’s about revenge. And love. And an aspiring writer who really wants to make it as a writer. He finds out what it took to make it, but, oh my.

And wait—it’s got a lot in there about how to write a book, about where inspiration may come from and how characters behave, or misbehave, as the author stretches towards a good ending. There's something in this book for writers to reflect on.

Langer does it all well—builds one setting after the next that supports and drives the story; presents dialog that pits the agendas of one character after the next against the other and also drives the story and fleshes out characters. He reveals little bits of news along the way (legitimately) that drive the plot in new directions. Characters change, their goals are pushed off their original targets as they wrestle with their choices all the way along.

I finished reading this book at 2 a.m. That’s a record for me. Hope you enjoy the book.
